El País articles on youth in Spain

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

jovenes.jpg

I’ve posted them here for those that are interested in taking a look. They are in Spanish, but are somewhat informative. As I said on Jacob’s blog, I find El País to be an unbalanced source of news (toward the liberal side) and I think this series of articles reflect that lack of objectivity.

The articles are in a PDF file.

Fascinating picture

Amazing array of colors. I’d like to know what camera the photographer was using. Whatever it is, I want one.

If she’d just leaned out a little bit further… this would have been so much better.

The Return of Unfortunate Names

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

assesmakeupYou might have thought that I’d forgotten about unfortunate names… but I haven’t. Unfortunately, opportunities abound in Spain, a place where some people think that saving money on translation is more important than saving face before a watching world.

The above photo is of a beautician’s school about 5 minutes’ walk from my house. I have no idea what they are trying to say, but it is obvious that if they do speak any other languages besides Spanish, it certainly isn’t English.

Nuclear Nightmares

I came across this website today documenting the effects of various nuclear disasters, both unintentioned and intentioned in the former Soviet Union.

It is well worth a look and a bit of a pray. If you aren’t the praying kind, I honestly don’t know what you’ll do. Looking at these photos and reading the stories of the people affected by these catastrophes has shocked me more than anything in a really long time.

The capability of mankind to perform acts of evil in the name of progress, power and conquest is unbelievable.
I blogged about Chernobyl and a different photo album 2 years ago here.

In England this week…

… for some 24-7 prayer meetings.

I’m going to a costume party at which the theme is the U.S.A. Guess that means I don’t have to dress up!

Will be back on Thursday morning.

The BBC on Bonhoeffer

Friday, April 14th, 2006

bonhoeffer.jpgScanning the BBC News website today, I saw a peculiar headline: “How a pacifist decided whether it was right to kill Hitler“. Only one semi-prominent pacifist that I know of had ever written on the subject: Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I was surprised to find that the article was, in fact, about Bonhoeffer. Probably one of the most signficant theologians of the 20th century even though most Christians are more likely to have heard of Max Lucado rather than Bonhoeffer (shudder). Check out the article, buy yourself Cost of Discipleship and Living Together.
