bathroomafter.jpgWhat a complete fiasco this turned out to be! A week and 4 trips to IKEA later, I’ve finally finished fixing the sinks and cabinets in both of our bathrooms. It turned out to be much more of an adventure than I had at first thought it would be.

I think this entire experience is one more reason that it is highly preferable to avoid patronising multinational corporations in favour of locally owned businesses. It all started when I realized that one of the cabinets that I had bought to replace the rotting ones that we currently had was too big for the bathroom that I wanted to put it in. Much to my chagrin, I quickly came to the conclusion that I would have to return to the dreaded temple of consumerism that is IKEA. I’ve already written about this den of thieves here. That post strangely led to a conversation between my mother and I about God. I don’t expect the same result this time.

I’ve been working on switching out the sink cabinets (is that what those things are called?) today. They are completely ruined after who-knows-how-many years of standing water seeping into them. A real mess. Anyway, our renter’s insurance came through with a bit of cash to replace the cabinets. Which is nice. The not so nice part is that they haven’t elected to pay for the sinks or the accompanying counters which were custom made for these specific cabinets. Or was it vice-versa? Probably. At any rate, sinks and counters cost at least three times as much as the silly cabinets. That means that I am trying to be creative and find cheap solutions using the counters and sinks that we already have. The problem is that both are very old and the inexpensive cabinets made now are not compatible with them.

I’m taking trip number two out to IKEA to see what cheap solutions I can find. If I can find a wood counter that will fit the sinks we have, then that could do it. Even if they don’t fit, we can always resort to jigsaw madness. In the event that things get that bad, you can be sure that pictures will follow…

Wilco.

wilcoaustin.jpgI can’t really say much more than that. I don’t wanna gush on about how great they are and what an attractive personality Jeff Tweedy is, but they are so good that it is difficult to contain myself.

I really started getting into Wilco (I don’t listen to that many American bands now-a-days… Just in a different cultural stream over here) when I heard a gig of theirs broadcast on NPR during one of their All Songs Considered program. Apart from the fact that the band absolutely rocked it, I was especially impressed with the individual honesty, courage and transparency of Jeff Tweedy. You might ask how those characteristics showed themselves during a concert. Well, there is a “sort of” story.

msorigami.jpgMicrosoft just don’t get it. I’m not sure that I get “it” either when it comes to 100% of consumer electronics and computing. But when I look at Microsoft’s super-uber duper new portable device (MS Origami), it just makes me laugh. They soooo want to be creative, intuitive and user-friendly. But they just don’t get it.

Yesterday, a friend of mine sent me this link for a teaser trailer of the new device. Then today I read an article on Origami on the BBC website which directed me to this commercial for the device here.
