I’m not dead yet.

Jonah DeadNot yet anyway. Just lots of pretty important and urgent things to tend to rather than this blog. I do promise to get back to it when life get’s a little bit more normal this fall.

When your wife is sick and you have about 101 things to do, blogs tend to get pushed waaaayyyy down on the list of priorities. If I have creative energy to do anything, I need to spend it in other ways.

See you soon.

Hope you’re all doing well.

Did you really need one more reason to switch to Mac?

StevejobsIf you did, check out Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ commencement speech to Stanford Grads on June 14th. Do you wanna buy a computer from people who really don’t care (aka Microsoft… make no mistake about it, they don’t care about you. I can show you some chilling footage of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. He makes my skin crawl)? Or do you wanna buy a computer made by a company headed up by someone who loves what he is doing with his life?

Your decision.

Silencio

Sorry for the silence over the last few weeks. I have a lot of excuses, most of them valid.

Heather’s developed some kidney stones and has been laid up in bed for a week. We had Mark Knight come over from Cambridge University to hang out for a week. And my mom flew over from 2 weeks in Italy to help me paint Sophia’s room and put up some curtains in our bedroom. And Kati nearly died from a very high fever due to Lyme’s disease.

Kati’s better and there won’t be any long term effects of the disease. Phew!

Heather’s still got a lot of pain in her right kidney and has to be on quite a bit of medication to be able to rest comfortably. She also has to drink about 3 litres of water every day which doesn’t help her feel less like a whale. It would be really good if her kidneys would go back to normal and she would be able to enjoy these last few weeks of pregnancy.

I’m not sure if I’ll be much better at keeping up on my blog as I’ve got a load of work over the next few weeks and loads of studying too. I’ll do my best.

The Downfall

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005

Downfall-1SThis is not a movie for the faint at heart. It’s about the downfall of Berlin as seen from inside Adolf Hitler’s bunker underneath the Chancillerie in the last few hours of the Third Reich. I’ve watched it twice today because it was quite simply unlike any other movie I have ever seen.

The movie has caused a lot of stir in Germany because it portrays Hitler as a human being rather than a monster. That said, it does not portray him in a favourable light. It shows him to be an incredibly screwed up, evil human being who was full of hate and venom. Swiss actor Bruno Ganz does and UNBELIEVABLE job of playing Hitler. Very convincing and disturbing. I seem to be into disturbing movies lately. Hmmm…

This movie also shows people around him who are caught up in a power structure they can’t get out from under without being executed. Others are somehow drawn to this man and his ideas even though they know that he is at least partly insane. It is amazing to see the bubble of ir-reality that developed around a man that was completely out of touch.

The whole movie is based on the memoirs of Traudl Junge, the young woman who was Hitler’s secretary during his last two years of life.

DISCLAIMER: If you are bothered by violence and disturbing images, do not see this movie. This movie will shake you in a way that no other movie about the second World War has before. Don’t see it unless you are ready for that.
