Semana Santa photo album

Sunday, March 27th, 2005

CrucificadoSemana Santa is all but over. My Mom has gone back to the US and I’ve put a photo album up to commemorate this year’s holy week festivities. I put one up last year too, but didn’t do much to explain the whole thing. I’ve taken a stab at it, but probably haven’t done very well in communicating what the whole experience is like. Heather has done a better job here. It really is impossible to completely understand what Semana Santa is like until you live it first-hand. Anyone wanna come on over next year?

Holy Week and my mom

Monday, March 21st, 2005

My Mom and her partner arrived on Sunday morning. Holy Week is in full swing here in Sevilla. I’ll put up a small collection of pictures this week to try and communicate the reality of a very religious city that celebrates Easter in overdrive. My mother was brought up catholic, so the Holy Week festivities could be pretty interesting for her.

My Mom and I get along pretty well. We tend to have stimulating conversations. So far we’ve talked about God, Mary, whether or not God is a woman. We also touched briefly on whether or not the USA is going to hell in a handbasket, if we can really know truth and the French Revolution.

I probably won’t blog an awful lot this week as any extra time I have will go towards studying or sleeping.

Wow! Technology with a REAL use.

I love gadgets. I love new technology. The way that man can continually invent things to make his life easier and more comfortable fascinates me. I am not at all sure that this drive to “gadgetise” human existence is at all healthy, but it fascinates me none the less.

One of the sites that I check regularly (yes, I do use an RSS reader) had a feature on this. Quite possibly the coolest and most exciting thing to be invented this year. Not just because it is new technology, but because it is new technology that isn’t useful for those of us in the western world. Interested? Check it out.

Speaking of quotes…

Who said the following when asked if they are a Christian or not?

“Yes. Interestingly, if you ask three people what it means to be Christian, you will get three different answers. Some feel being baptized is sufficient. Others feel you must accept the Bible as absolute historical fact. Still others require a belief that all those who do not accept Christ as their personal savior are doomed to hell. Faith is a continuum, and we each fall on that line where we may. By attempting to rigidly classify ethereal concepts like faith, we end up debating semantics to the point where we entirely miss the obvious–that is, that we are all trying to decipher life’s big mysteries, and we’re each following our own paths of enlightenment. I consider myself a student of many religions. The more I learn, the more questions I have. For me, the spiritual quest will be a life-long work in progress.”

Leave your answers in the comments. I’ll put the answer up in a couple days… Followed by a few thoughts.

“The conception of two people living together for twenty-five years without having a cross word suggests a lack of spirit only to be admired in sheep”- Alan Patrick Herbert

These personality tests are crap. They certainly don’t inspire me much. My result:
