Snowed in…

Monday, February 28th, 2005

Jim and I made it up to the base outside of Bilbao in good time on Sunday night. We stopped for lunch in a town outside Madrid to eat some entirely ridiculous steaks and ribs with Kenny Clewett, one of the guys that lead 24-7 here in Spain.

As we rolled up to the ‘caserio’, a heavy snow began to fall. We woke up this morning to a beautiful white blanket of snow covering the land. Unfortunately, the Spanish (Basques included) shut down highways if there is too much cloud cover… So you can imagine what they’ll do if there are 6 inches of snow. The highways are all shut up and we are somewhat cut off from the world. For moments like this, GPRS is really cool.

I start teaching on Evangelism this afternoon.

Shooting off to Bilbao in 30 min. time

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

Jim and I will be driving about 1200 kilometres today through all kinds of weather (it’s raining now and sleet and snow are forecast for northern Spain) so some prayer would be appreciated! I’m going to be teaching for a week on evangelism in the YWAM Discipleship Training School. I haven’t really had time to prepare much as I have been a “little” bit occupied this week. Ahem. But I feel good about the week and am looking forward to seeing what God does.

The last time I was at the YWAM centre up there, they didn’t have a phone line or internet. Odds are that things haven’t changed. But I should still be able to pick up email and blog through GPRS (for you american’s that’s hi-speed internet through your cellphone). Hee hee. It still amazes me how different things are in America when it comes to mobile technology.

Check em out here.

Also for another take on the whole Order of the Mustard Seed Vow Taking Ceremony which took place the day before IAM5, which I took part in, check out Andrew’s entry. For more information about the Order of the Mustard Seed, Rules of Life and Discipleship, click here.

too many christian books!

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2005

I just updated my current reading and realised that I am reading more christian books than “normal” ones. Gonna have to do something to remedy that! Purely a face-saving measure. I am actually also reading “The Ascendancy of Europe” by M.S. Anderson too, but I’ve not put it on my book list as certain people might say that I am turning into a “academic”. God forbid.

Does anyone actually look at the left sidebar of my blog? I wonder if it has any point at all.

Studying David Hume this week. As if things weren’t stressful enough. Joy…

Generous Orthodoxy and the Food Bank

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

GenerousI’ve been reading this book called Generous Orthodoxy by Brian McLaren. Although I am finding it really interesting and quite funny in parts, I can’t help thinking often as I am reading that really what he is getting across in almost 300 pages is “Respect others and their beliefs”. I suppose that for today’s convoluted generation it takes 300 pages to get that simple message across.

I met a guy today at the food bank where I volunteer on Tuesdays that really got me thinking about how completely jaded my generation is.

His name is Pedro and he is about (I’m guessing) 60. I worked with him in the dispensary sorting out bags of fruits and vegetables that will be given out to families tomorrow. Pedro is SUCH a character. He is very passionate about God, loves to talk, but at the same time he has a very deep sense of respect for other people. He told Andrés and I about how he had been with some Mormon missionaries early that day and that he had told them that as long as they believed in he Jesus of the Bible then he considered them brothers. He listened to them patiently, watched their video and asked them loads of questions about the book of Mormon. He prayed with them, prayed for them and encouraged them to read their Bibles. But he didn’t get into an argument with them, respected them at all times and encouraged them to seek truth in the Bible. He even said that he wasn’t sure if they would be in heaven or not. He wasn’t convinced that God would hold them responsible for their own ignorance since that wasn’t necessarily their fault but their leaders’ fault.

What impressed me was the deep respect that he had for their beliefs and for the beliefs of anyone simply because they were made in the image of God and therefore worthy of his respect. Man, have we lost that in this generation. I wanna find that and see it multiply across this generation.

48 hours in to the week…

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

The week is going really well…

Within the first twenty four hours we had non-christians in the prayer room (actually within the first 30 min… is that a record or something??), a handful of burnt-out believers who have professed to be “sick of church” were rubbing elbows with conservative evangelicals and even praying together… A dove made out of a plastic cup (i’ll have to post a picture of that one) fell off the wall during worship at the launch party and one of the conservative crowd made a crack about the Holy Spirit having fallen in the room which gave everyone a good chuckle… and members of all ages (i prayed in the room with a trio of 70 year olds for a bit today) of at least seven different churches have been through the prayer room so far.

I’ve done a lot of prayer rooms, but I find this one especially exciting because it is in “my” city…
