Introducing our new buddy…

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

andres Andrés Isea is the guy that came back to Sevilla with us from Ibiza. He gave his life to Jesus this past autumn as a result of the prayers and friendship of the 24-7 Mission team in Ibiza last year. He’s had a really up and down first year as a Christian. The church that he started going to in Ibiza helped him a lot, but they also tried to shoehorn him into a legalistic mold. Fortunately, he would have none of it as the desire in his heart really is just to follow Jesus and obey him.

Everything sort of came to a head about 2 weeks ago when the family that he was living with kicked him out because of difference in opinions about how he should live and dress. That left him with nowhere to live. The same day he lost his job. He had just got back from a big Christian festival on mainland Spain where he had really learned a lot and received loads from God. Now it looked like he was gonna have to go back with his old drug-dealing crowd. What else could we do but invite him to come and live with us?

So now he is here with us! Continuing to grow in God, discover Sevilla and waiting to get his work permit. Please pray that he’ll be able to get that soon and without problems.

Whatever happened to style?

nxnwWe went to see North by Northwest tonight at the Cine de Verano (open air cinema that happens in different public places around Sevilla). The sucky thing is that we had to pay to go. Seems like open air cinema should be free to me, but nevermind. The good thing was that the movie was in its original version (english) with subtitles.

Anyways, I sat watching Carey Grant in this movie (wasn’t the first time for me, but it was the first time in a long time that I’d seen NxNW) and I was just puzzled by what makes this guy so attractive. I mean, from his very first movie he looks like he’s 60, has way to much of a tan, deep lines in his face… I mean I would understand if someone mistook his face for a saddlebag! But I can’t deny there is something about him that does just make you wanna give him a hug, help him out, whatever. I guess if I were female I would think he was cute… who knows. But as we were talking home, I was talking with Andrés about what it is that makes this guy so cool. I think it just boils down to style. The guy had style. He had a way of relating with people, talking, interacting that was just sooo stylish. I can’t really explain it any more than that. Go watch North by Northwest. I know it is old, cheesy, outdated, whatever. But watch Carey Grant. He is sooo cool. He knows exactly what to say, how to say it and what posture to take as he does it. Everything seems precision calculated to win you over. But it isn’t. It’s totally natural. Just go get the movie. You’ll get what I mean.

Why is it that actors now-a-days don’t really have that style? Its so rare to come across it. Gene Hackman has it often. Dustin Hoffmann too. But all these young actors… Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell. No style. They should go check North by Northwest out of their local video store and take notes.

Using my blog for advertising products of dubious nature…

Monday, August 30th, 2004

About once a week I get a series of comments on my blog from people advertising Viagra and Cialis. Does anyone know how I can keep these people from commenting? I go straight in and delete their comments, but i would rather that they weren’t able to comment at all. I keep blocking IP’s and such, but its like trying to hold back the ocean with a wine cork. It just doesn’t happen.

I had one of those scammin’ guys from Nigeria give it a go as well. He wanted my bank details because I had inherited millions from some diamond baron in Africa. Ha! Don’t I wish. Funny tho.

Spammin’ and using people blogs for advertising should be a felony. Let’s string ‘em up!

Sorry about the blog blackout the last couple of days. I inadvertently let this domain name registration run out. Whoops! Shouldn’t happen for… well another year.

Sun Setting…

Friday, August 27th, 2004

We head out on Saturday morning in the wee hours… Gotta be down at the port in San Antonio for about 5am. Ugh. So much to do before we head out.

I’m in charge of a baptism tomorrow. Never done that before. Should be groovy.

In a way, leaving is like the sun going down. It marks the end of a day, but the beginning of night (lots of cool stuff happens at night, contrary to popular opinion). It also means that tomorrow is coming… Sitting at the end of our summer adventure, I feel thoroughly worn out. I feel like I am sitting on the beach here in San An catching the last couple rays of the sun. Usually feel tired and anxious for the cool of the night to arrive. We had some sort of crises to deal with pretty much every week this summer and a lot of that has fallen more or less to me to deal with. Ever feel like a garbage man? Everyone else just chucks out all their bad stuff and you get stuck having to deal with it? I know I do sometimes. I wish it paid better. :P

The cool of the night is coming tho! I am looking forward to getting home on Saturday night and heading in to our local haunt, seeing Jim behind the bar and drinking free beer. Ahhhhh! Wireless internet at home, our bed, our house, our neighborhood, our friends. Brilliant.

This summer has been fantastic and very fruitful, but I really need some chill time. Don’t feel like I’ve really gotten that this summer. My Open University term is over in mid-september so after that I should get a couple days of chilling with God, vegging with friends in front of the PS2 (within reason) and getting back into exercise. Thanks to all of you that have been so supportive over the summer.
